Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
