The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
